Greetings Brothers and Sisters,

March 20th marks the first day of Spring. The days are getting longer, bringing with them more sunshine, at least we hope so.

March is also Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the vital contributions women have made to our history, culture and society. Observed annually in the United States since 1987, Women’s History Month 2026 runs from Sunday, March 1st through Tuesday, March 31st. This year’s theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” was selected by the National Women’s History Alliance; highlighting the critical role women play in environmental, economic, and social sustainability. It honors those who lead, innovate, and build a more resilient and equitable future for both people and our planet.

Our Black History Committee recently hosted its 30th Annual Program, “Passing the Torch.” What a powerful message delivered by all of the speakers. A common theme throughout the program was that we cannot be afraid to pass the torch. I sat back and listened carefully to as the message connected to so many aspects of life. Too often, the older generation hesitates to pass the torch to the younger generation for various reasons; the biggest being fear that once they pass it, their own light goes out. But that simply is not true. Passing the torch ensures that the flame continues to burn brighter. The same applies to our Local and our Union. We must empower and mentor the next generation to keep our legacy strong.

We were moved by a powerful poem from Mama Sol, enjoyed an energetic performance from a talented dance group, and had the privilege of hearing our very own Brother Antwan Kirkland play the saxophone. I could have listened to him for another hour. He was outstanding. Thank you to Damon Richardson and his committee for organizing such a meaningful and inspiring event. We look forward to what’s in store for next year.

We also held our 7th Annual UAW 659 Conservation Dinner. Duane and I would like to thank everyone who attended, all of the volunteers who helped make the evening possible, and Sarah from the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance for her partnership and support. It was clear that everyone in attendance understood the purpose of the dinner. It truly showed during the live auction.

The funds raised support our free Kids’ Day event at Bluegill Boat Launch, part of Genesee County Parks, along with other conservation projects. Since partnering with the parks, we have build a 32’x48′ pavilion at the launch and purchased a 40’x20′ floating fishing dock. Currently in the works is a smaller pavilion behind the dock, giving parents a shaded place to sit while their children fish. These are all projects we can all be proud of.

Our Pre/Post Retirement Classes are wrapping up, and they have seen some great attendance and outstanding speakers. While it is exciting to see members preparing for the next chapter of their lives, it is also bittersweet knowing we are saying goodbye to so much experience and knowledge. As always, the Education Committee does a fantastic job organizing this important program.

The Easter Bunny and Easter Egg Hunt will take place on March 29, 2026, at the UAW Local 659 Union Hall. The Easter Bunny will be here from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and the egg hunt will begin at 2:30 pm. We hope to see everyone there, searching for eggs and enjoying time together.
