Vice President’s Article

By: Anthony Davis

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,

Coat, No Coat, Coat, No Coat… This seems to be the theme with the weather lately. By the time this paper is mailed out, the weather should break and we can have some nice sunny days. As we go into the sunny days, please remember our two-wheeled friends on the road. LOOK TWICE, SAVE A LIFE!

In the presidents article last month, Alex spoke on the UAW being such a diverse Union and how we heard this many times at the Leadership Conference. I had a few members who just returned from Black Lake. As they were telling me how much they learned and that the experience was wonderful, the one thing they didn’t know is how diverse we really are- from state workers, city workers, hospitals, universities, helicopter parts, water heaters, and even wicker furniture. This is just to name a few.

I know one point mentioned that had me thinking was when it’s time to renew driver’s license or tags, instead of doing it by mail, make an appointment and go into the Secretary of State office.

Mother’s Day was Sunday, May 11th. I hope all the mothers were spoiled and had a wonderful day.

Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, is the last Monday in May. This is when we honor those who have died in service to our country. It originated during the American Civil War, when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. So, on Monday, May 26, 2025, please take a moment of silence and honor all who have served.

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., UAW Local 659 will host the 3rd Annual “Get Youth Outdoors Day” at the Flint Bluegill Boat Launch. This is a free kid’s event that includes fishing, a BB gun trailer, field dog training, and many other exciting activities. All youth participants must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Registration is not required this year.

I wanna thank everyone who came out and helped build the pavilion at Bluegill Boat Launch. Even with a few minor problems, we handled it, and it looks great, so again…thank you! It will be nice to be able to utilize it at this year’s Get Youth Outdoors Day.

Father’s Day is an annual holiday honoring people’s fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It was first proposed by Sonara Smart Dodd, in 1909, and is currently celebrated in the United States annually on the third Sunday in June. This year, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15th. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

There has been a huge interest in another T-shirt order. We are getting together some prices, so keep an eye on Facebook, Local659.net or the Union boards for more details.

The new updated version of our website is up and running. Please check it out. We are continuously updating it, making changes and some small tweaks. Local659.net is the website. Get on and let us know what you think.

Joint Council Meetings will be suspended for June, July and August. The meetings will resume on September 14, 2025. I would like to wish my Dad a Happy Birthday and Happy Father’s Day in Heaven. I miss you, Buddy.

Remember, no matter who you are or where you are from, we are in this together!
