NAETC Chairman’s Report

By: Ton Edmonds

Greetings NAETC Brothers & Sisters,

At the writing of this article, we are just getting back from our forced July vacation. Those who wanted to be off, I hope you enjoyed your time with family and friends. To those who did not, I hope you still enjoyed time off.

Your Shop Committee does/did not agree with management on the July shutdown or their reasoning for it. We had work in the building to support not having a shutdown and had work outsourced that we could have accomplished. This was done under the guise of Consumers Energy maintenance and network server updating. Both of which could have easily been scheduled during the Easter holiday break, when we were off for four days.

We feel there were some clear violations in and around this shutdown and are acting accordingly.

On a more positive note, I am pleased to announce we had apprentice offers out for two diemaker apprentices, which have been accepted and they will start early in August.

We also have a maintenance JIT new hire starting soon.

Our workload on the first floor is hovering around five die lines and it looks to stay that way for a while.

The third floor has work in some areas of design and engineering, mostly press group and simulation at the moment. Manpower seems to be one of the bigger hurdles on that end of the business. Attrition and the lack of replacements and training in design and engineering needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Until next month, stay safe and enjoy the time we have.
