Greetings Brothers and Sisters,

Can you believe that summer is over? Fall is here, leaves are changing colors and falling to the ground.

A few updates around the hall include the old fence between us and the bingo hall has been removed, which has really opened up the grass area and will make it much easier to maintain. We also had a couple trees removed near the dumpster. In addition, we donated the old bleachers from the ball field to UAW Local 598. This allowed us to clear out the overgrown weeds and small trees underneath them, making the area more manageable going forward.

For the 31 days of October, Breast Cancer Awareness can look different for many people. While some do pink in observance, others may silently reflect, experience sorrow, or give recognition.

Breast cancer death rates in the United States have dropped by 44% since 1989. That’s not a coincidence. For 40 years, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has helped raise awareness of breast cancer across the nation. It has encouraged millions to take action, resulting in increased early detection and advancements in treatment that have saved more than half a million lives.

Although breast cancer is much more common in women, breast cancer affects men, too. In 2021, President Joe Biden designated October 17 thru October 23 as Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week. According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,800 men in the U. S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025.

On Friday, September 26, 2025, I joined some Brothers and Sisters from the Swartz Creek CCA plant to walk in the Swartz Creek Homecoming parade. We always have a great reception. We have done this event for a few years now, and one thing that will never get old is that while we were walking through downtown, people began to stand and clap, with some yelling “UAW!”. It is always an awesome feeling to know we have this kind of support from the community. A special thank you to Bruce Simms, Jr. from Simms Chevrolet in Clio for allowing us to use that beautiful truck for the parade.

On October 5, 2025, CCA held a golf outing to help support the Old Newsboys. It was a great turnout, the weather was perfect, and everyone was having a great time while raising money for the kids. Thank you to all who volunteered, and thank you to all the golfers.

Trunk or Treat is on October 26, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 p.m., here at the Union Hall. This event is always a great time with a huge turnout. Grab some candy, decorate the car, and enjoy all the kids. If you cannot attend the event and would like to donate candy, we will be accepting donations at the Hall.

Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11th ” Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the very foundation of Veterans Day.” – Charles B. Rangel

An Act was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11th of each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was initially intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the most significant mobilization of service members in the history of the United States. On June 27, 1950, the American forces were sent to fight in Korea.

In 1954, the veterans service organizations asked Congress to change the word “Armistice” to ” Veterans.” Congress made this change, and on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to pay tribute to all American veterans, wherever and whenever they served.

UAW Local 659 Old Newsboys Toy Drive will be from November 17 through December 12, 2025. New, unwrapped, American-made toys can be dropped off at drop boxes in your respective plants, or the Union Hall will accept toys through December 15th. For more information, contact your Community Service rep in your plant or call the Hall at 810-232-4130.

Santa will be returning to the Union Hall. This is a ‘mark your calendar’ reminder. Our Kids Christmas Party is December 7, 2025, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., here at the Hall.

Union Sportsman Alliance 2026 calendars are available at the Hall. Come get them while they last. They make great Christmas gifts.

Remember, no matter who you are or where you are from, we are all in this together!
